Bulletproof your mind and body with these superfoods.
Superfoods are foods that confer health benefits such as reducing cholesterol, increasing mental functions, and reducing the risk of heart disease. And the great part is that you can get these benefits from many foods you already love.
Here’s a list of five of my favorite types of superfoods:
Superfood for the Brain:
For this, you can’t beat blueberries. Studies indicate a diet rich in blueberries significantly improves learning capacity and motor skills. Studies also indicate that blueberries may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. And blueberries in any form – fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried – will do.
Superfood for the Heart:
Spinach. There’s a reason this was Popeye’s favorite food. Spinach is low in calories, but high in many vitamins and minerals such as Folate, potassium, and coenzyme Q10 – all of which are essential in cardiovascular health.
Superfood to Reduce Cancer:
Tomatoes. Tomatoes are one of the few superfoods that confer benefits even if you get it from processed foods like tomato paste. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that studies have found helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. In fact, in a study on prostate cancer, researchers found that men who consumed more than 10 servings of tomato-based foods a day had a 35 percent reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer. But you don’t have to resort to 10 servings to see the benefits as studies indicate that the risk of cancer reduces as your lycopene levels increase.
The bonus yummy Superfood – Dark Chocolate:
Yes, I said chocolate. Research indicates that chocolate with 60% or higher cocoa content is full of antioxidants and can also help to reduce blood pressure.
So when you are strolling down the grocery aisle trying to think of what to make for dinner, may I suggest a spinach salad with tomatoes, blueberries and some dark chocolate.
Your heart, brain, and the rest of your body will thank me (as you will too).
