SMART goals

Let’s talk about goals and how to be SMART!

You may have heard about the acronym SMART Goals. I want to talk about why it is so important to be smart about the goals you set.

SMART is an acronym for how to set goals for yourself. It stands for S – Specific M – Measurable A – Attainable R – Relevant T – Time-bound

As you prepare to work towards your fitness goals its important to get your priorities straight. What exactly do you want to get out of your workouts? What might you be working towards. Setting SMART goals helps guide what you need to do in order to properly plan for your workouts and the results you are hoping to achieve.

Let’s break down the 5 words of SMART goals to best figure out how you can train effectively.

First is Specific.

You want to have a goal that is specific to you and that avoids being generic. What exactly do you want to get out of training. If you are working out just to workout you may not have a very good direction or idea of where to start!

Second is Measurable.

We need to make sure we can measure the progress of where you started and where you end up or your success will be all for nothing!

Third is Attainable.

You want to make sure that this goal of yours is something you feel you can achieve. If you don’t feel that it is something you personally can do then it wont be fun for you to work towards it.

Fourth is Relevant.

How does your goal apply to your life? Can you see yourself actually working towards this goal based on everything else going on in your life? Sometimes starting small leads to bigger things so make sure you have a goal that fits within your current life.

And lastly Time-bound.

Always pick an end date for your goals. This is not to say you cannot change your end date or modify your plan along the way but you have to set boundaries for yourself so that you don’t get off track or lose sight of what you are working towards.

So try it. Sit down and think of a goal for yourself and figure out how all 5 of these words look based on your goal. Once you have these 5 words defined your plan should be laid out right in front of you. And if you need help ironing out the details sign up with a trainer like myself to get you on track today!
