How to Restart Your Strength Training Program After a Break

Let’s say that you have some history with strength training, be it body pump or P90x, but it’s been a while.  Maybe you had to take a step back to start a family or even care for a family member, got an amazing career opportunity or anything of the like.

These periods of time hit many of us, even the ones that seem to be the most dedicated.

What separates the successful from the unsuccessful though is how you’re able to pick yourself up after such a break.

6 Essential Tips for Restarting Your Strength Training Program

Here are some tips to help get that fire started up again:

1. Accept Your New Starting Point

First acknowledge that some time has passed, your new starting point will not be where you left off.

2. Rebuild Proper Form

Focus on rebuilding form first.  Those heavy lifts or cardio PR’s will be coming soon but in order to hit those it’s important to reestablish form first.

3. Adapt Your Training Schedule

Acknowledge your new lifestyle and fit it to your training program.  Make sure that you have enough time allotted to recover from your new training program.

4. Optimize Your Nutrition

Take time to focus on nutrition.  Where have you been falling short during your time off?  What are some short term goals that you can focus on now rather than later?

5. Set Achievable Goals

Set attainable short term goals.  Give yourself milestones that you can reach on a daily or even a weekly basis to keep you motivated.

6. Build Your Support Network

Establish your new support system.  Every new lifestyle requires a different support system.  Find your new circle and start to work on supporting each other together.

Getting Back on Track with Your Strength Training Program

Starting off after some time off can be overwhelming.  It’s very tempting to want to start off where you left off but feel discouraged when that vision doesn’t become reality.  Going through these easy to follow steps will help you get your foot in the door of your new fitness journey.
