Nutrition Basics

When starting a new fitness routine, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the mass of information available at your fingertips.

I’d like to give you 3 simple ideas to get you started down the right path when it comes to nutrition.

1.Drink a lot of water

No matter your fitness goal, drinking a lot of water will help. Trying to lose weight? Water will help you flush more things out of your system, keeping your sodium levels in check and reducing bloating and inflammation. Trying to gain muscle? 75% of muscle is water! Drink more water and make more progress. If drinking a lot of water is an intimidating goal, try starting with 64 ounces of water per day.

2.Track your macros

The best nutrition coaches can give you targets to aim for when it comes to caloric intake and macronutrient (proteins, fats and carbs) amounts. However, due to individual variances in genetics, gut health, and more, those targets will be estimates. Track your intake for a few days, and you can start to see what works best for you. There are lots of apps out there to help you, but if you’re more of a pen-and-paper kind of person, just writing your foods in your journal is a great start. Speaking of a journal…

3.Keep a journal

Some foods will make you feel better than others. It’s a simple matter to write down how you feel after each meal and begin to notice trends. For best results, record how you feel a few times each day and start to look for common patterns. If you get a headache every time you eat a certain food, you might have an allergy or sensitivity. Try eliminating that food for a few days and see what happens.

There are lots of ways to get healthy, and your nutrition will be a substantial part of your success. Start small with these three habits, and see where they take you!
