When we decide to get in shape, lead a healthier life, and get in the best shape of our life we need to know two things. Our WHY, and our WHAT. Why do we want to do this, and what is driving us to get there? Without knowing these two things we will more than likely be spinning our wheels not getting anywhere.
So what exactly is your WHY?
It’s important that your WHY is something that moves you, motivates you, and should reflect the reason that you want to be in the best shape of your life!
Take a moment and think about your WHY. Once you’ve discovered your WHY, take a moment to write it down. I’ll give you my WHY as an example. My WHY is to protect myself from heart disease since I have a family history of this and I want to be here for my family for as long as I possibly can. Maybe your WHY is similar, or maybe it’s just to look and feel better. This is IMPORTANT, and should not be overlooked or taken lightly. Keep your WHY close to you. Write it down and carry it with you. Once in a while, you may lose sight of your WHY and lose your motivation. When this happens, and oh trust me, it will, it’s inevitable. I’ve lost my motivation on more than one occasion. Take a moment and remember your WHY to get back on track.
We aren’t done yet! Once we’ve discovered our WHY, we need to discover our WHAT. This is going to be just as important so don’t overlook this step! What are your goals? What drives you? When you start any fitness journey your goals have got to be crystal clear. The clearer you are about your goals the more success you are going to have so be specific! I don’t want to hear you say I just want to lose a few pounds or I just wanna be healthier. If it helps use the acronym SMART, which stands for specific measurable attainable relevant and time-sensitive.
When I say your goal has to be specific, I mean it has to be detailed, direct, and meaningful.
When I say your goal has to be measurable, I mean that you need to be able to measure that goal by looking at the inches if you’ve lost, if you’ve lost a dress size or pants size, or your total body fat loss.
Your goal has to be attainable which means that it needs to be realistic and you’ve got to be able to have the means, the tools, and the resources to achieve it.
Your goal also has to be relevant. So whatever your goal is, it’s got to be so important that it creates a sense of urgency that you cannot ignore. It’s going to be the number one priority in your life.
Your goal has to be time-sensitive. Whatever your goal, you’ve got to put a Deadline on it. And you have to do this because what’s going to happen, and I promise you this. You will procrastinate and say I’ll just start tomorrow turns in the next week and the next month and you never reach that goal. So put a deadline on it and stay committed.
So now I want you to grab a pen and paper and figure out what you’re smart goal is.
Write it down and put it everywhere. Put it on your refrigerator door, put it on your mirror above the bathroom sink, put it in your wallet, put it in your car. I want you to be constantly reminded of what your goal is. This is going to help you stay motivated and it’s going to help you keep your self accountable so that you don’t stray from your goal.
A perfect example of a smart goal would be to say that I want to lose 50 pounds in the next six months. Now, Break that goal down to make it more manageable. Let’s lose an average of 2 pounds a week, or 8 pounds a month for the next six months. That sounds a lot more manageable and attainable than just saying 50 pounds in six months, doesn’t it? Damn, right it does!
Now get out there, figure out what your WHAT is. No ifs, ands or buts. When you are committed to making these changes and reaching these goals there is no room for saying I will try, I want, I’ll do it tomorrow, I’ll give it my best shot. The only thing I wanna hear you say is I will. I will do this, I will start right now, I will reach these goals, and I will be the best version of myself that I can possibly be and I will be in the best shape of my life no matter what!
Now that you know your WHY and your WHAT, you are that much closer to reaching your goals and becoming who you are meant to be!
Your next step is to have a roadmap drawn out for you that tells you how to get from where you are, to where you want to be.
When starting out, keep it simple and don’t over complicate things!
