Who doesn’t want a long, healthy life and dream of staying fit into old age? But what does “being fit” mean? For some, perhaps, to do something with the children or to play ball in the garden. For the others, to still be on the starting line at the start line at the age of 80. Whatever it is for you, one thing is clear: to stay healthy and active for a long time, you need to do something.
It’s best to start incorporating strength training into your training plan right away. And at least twice a week to achieve a positive effect. Why is this so important?
From the age of 40, it becomes increasingly important for women to maintain their muscle strength. Because from this point on – and sometimes even earlier – the natural aging process already leads to muscle breakdown.
Fortunately, these changes in the body do not happen overnight. With the right women-specific strength training, you can stimulate your muscles and compensate for decreasing estrogen levels.
This is important because estrogen not only controls your muscle growth, but also helps your body break down free radicals, keep your blood sugar levels constant, regulate your appetite, keep your body temperature and blood pressure constant, regulate mood swings, and is also involved in maintaining your bone density. As you can see, there are many important functions that you can positively influence through regular training!
Strength training maintains your independence as you age
The more muscle you build, the stronger and more resilient your body is – and the sooner you can stay fit and healthy into old age. This also includes seemingly banal things, such as the fact that you can increase your grip strength, i.e. the strength in your fingers, through strength training and thus be able to open bottles or cans independently – a not insignificant skill if you want to remain independent into old age.
Strength training is also at least as effective as endurance training when it comes to lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
And: Strength training is not only good for the body, but also for the psyche and can even alleviate depression symptoms!
Strength training forms a sexy body
If all this is not enough motivation for you, then think about how good strength training is for your figure. A flat stomach, tight legs, a firm buttocks – who doesn’t want that? The advantage for us women is: Women usually respond well and quickly to strength training, which means that if you train regularly, you will see results very quickly and feel happier and more satisfied.
You’re never too old for strength training!
It’s never too late to start strength training. So if you’ve only been Team Cardio so far, I can only recommend you to go to the gym! Take it easy and choose a studio that’s on your way to work or close to home. From many years of experience, I can tell you: You won’t go regularly if you can’t integrate your training into your everyday life.
Set fixed days, pack your bag the night before so that there are no excuses. Maybe you will find a friend who will accompany you and you can train together – this is not only more fun, you can also motivate each other and celebrate successes together.
