Lifestyle Over Optimising is Killing Your Progress

Over optimizing

You’re stuck. Not because you lack potential, but because you’re over optimising.

You tell yourself you’re making progress:

  • Planning every detail.
  • Researching all possible outcomes.
  • Tweaking, refining, and adjusting before taking action.

But deep down, you know the truth. You’re stalling by over optimising. You’re standing at the edge of the pool, analysing the water temperature, wind resistance, and entry angle—while others are already in the water, swimming laps.

You convince yourself you’re “just preparing.” But if you’re not executing, you’re not progressing. I know this because I’ve been there. I delayed launching my podcast because I wanted the “perfect” setup. Also, obsessed over my social media strategy instead of actually posting. I fine-tuned my onboarding process instead of signing clients.

And guess what?

I missed hundreds of opportunities because I was waiting for everything to be perfect by optimising. You might be doing the same thing right now.

The Hidden Trap of Over-Optimising.

Why do you do this? Simple. Control. Planning feels safe. It gives you the illusion of progress. But in reality, you’re just avoiding uncertainty.

Be honest with yourself—are you really “optimising”? Or are you afraid to take imperfect action. You lie to yourself, saying: “I’ll start when I have all the information.” “I just need to refine it a little more.” “I’m not quite ready yet.”

But when is ready ever going to come? It’s like waiting for every traffic light to turn green before starting your road trip. You’ll never leave the driveway. I get it. I’ve done it too.

When I left the military, I didn’t have all the answers. No stable income. No roadmap. Also, no security. Just a six-month contract and no guarantee of what was next. And yet, here I am. Living life on my own terms, about to get married, growing a business that is completely mine.

None of it was perfect. None of it was “fully optimised.” But it was necessary.

And the same is true for you. At some point, you have to let go of perfect and embrace progress.

You’re Overthinking Your Health & Performance Too

You don’t just overthink your professional life—you overthink everything, for example..

“I’ll start training on Monday.”
“I need the perfect workout plan before I begin.”
“I have to find the best nutrition strategy first.”

Be honest—how long have you been saying this?

It’s like waiting for the perfect pair of running shoes before you start jogging. Meanwhile, the guy in old sneakers is already out there making progress. Stop over optimizing everything.

  • You don’t need the “perfect” gym program—you just need to start moving.
  • You don’t need the “ideal” nutrition plan—you just need to stop eating on autopilot.
  • Similarly, you don’t need more knowledge—you need more action.

Also, the longer you wait, the harder it gets. I see this in athletes all the time. They analyse every small detail—what training split is best, which supplements to take, whether fasted cardio is optimal. Meanwhile, the guy who just shows up and puts in the work every day? He’s the one actually making progress. Done imperfectly beats perfect in theory. Every time.

Stop Lying to Yourself About “More Research”

The biggest lie you tell yourself is: “I need more information before I start.” No, you don’t. It’s like reading 10 books on swimming instead of just jumping in the pool.

Furthermore if you’re stuck in research mode, ask yourself:

1) What life do you actually want to live?
2) What does that version of you think, act, and feel like?
3) Are you moving toward that life today—or just overthinking it?

Because here’s the truth:

Your identity creates your actions. Your actions create your reality. And right now, your actions are saying, “I’m not ready.” So the sooner you start living as the person you want to become, the faster that reality will take shape.

You Will Never Have Full Control. Accept It.

High performers struggle with letting go of control. But real freedom comes when you trust the process instead of forcing it.

  • The more you chase perfection, the more anxiety you create.
  • The more you let go and execute, the faster you grow.

I’ve experienced this firsthand.

Firstly, I left my football club without knowing what would happen—and landed the biggest transfer of my career. I surrendered to uncertainty—and ended up in Dubai, building a life beyond what I ever imagined. Finally I stopped perfecting this very newsletter—and just wrote it. So none of it was planned. All of it was necessary.

And that’s your lesson today: Let go. Take action. Course-correct along the way.

The 3-Step System to Escape Over-Optimization

If you want to stop overthinking and start executing, use this simple system:

Awareness – Recognise when you’re stuck in planning instead of acting.
Action – Take one immediate step forward, even if it’s not perfect.
Alignment – Adjust as you go, learning from execution instead of theory.

Bonus Rule: If something is 70% ready, launch it. Iterate later. Most people wait until everything is “ready”—and never start.

But the uncommon move forward before they feel ready.

Your Challenge: Take Action Today

What’s one thing you’ve been stuck on for too long?

Commit to executing it today.

No more waiting. No more refining. Just action. Most people will read this and move on. A few will reflect. But the uncommon? They take action.

So which one will you be?
