LifestyleWellness Qigong – An Ancient Practice for Health and Fitness

In the United States the general consensus is and studies have showed, that if you exercise 2-5 times per week, include a form of strength training and aerobic program, fitness and health markers will improve.

The long and short of it is – western exercise models are quite successful. Though only to a point. Other cultures around the world statistically beat the United States in many health and fitness categories. I believe the main reason is – their practices embody a holistic approach.

Over the last five decades, I have researched, studied, and practiced a variety of methods that are over 5000 thousand years old.

Qigong is such a practice.

Qigong is based on the ancient wisdom of Yin (female) and Yang (male) and the Tao (natural order of the universe). This addresses a holistic perspective and integrates the body, mind, and spirit, and our relationship to all that exists.

QigongI first met Qigong thirty-five years ago. I’ve been studying and practicing ever since and teaching for twenty-five.

Qigong- which translates to – working with energy – is a self-care practice that originated in China over 5000 years ago. It was originally created by Taoist sages, monks, and hermits.

The Taoist sages studied the cycles of nature, the heavens, and all living things. Through decades of observation, they realized – we are intertwined with nature and its effects on human health.  They created specific methods of breathing, meditation, and movement for cleansing, tonifying, nourishing, and strengthening the body, mind, and spirit.

Over time with further studies and practices, they found that health improved, and illnesses shortened and resolved. Longevity also increased. Doing a daily qigong practice provided more strength and energy for the rugged demands and challenges of life.

Qigong practices were then integrated into various martial arts.

It became evident that with consistent practice, training and fighting abilities improved significantly. The ability to react quicker improved. Strength and speed increased. Martial artists generated more explosive power production.  Also, endurance improved. There were less injuries. quicker recovery and healing time. These improvements were directly related to qigong.

Also, there’s a belief that Chinese acupuncture evolved from qigong principles and practices.

With over five decades in the fields of western practices for fitness, health and sports performance, I’ve found that the integration of qigong practices has greatly improved my own health, fitness, and sports performance, as well as that of all the clients and athletes I work with.
