Lifestyle Staying Healthy on the Road: Tips from My Truly Fit Life

At My Truly Fit Life, we have a dream of traveling the country, promoting health and wellness wherever we go, and embracing our passion for nature and adventure. So we quit our 9-5’s, started a coaching business and followed our dreams. Throughout our journey, we’ve experienced the thrills and challenges of life on the road. While traveling can be an exhilarating adventure, maintaining a healthy lifestyle during our adventures presents its unique challenges. From long drives and unpacking to finding gyms and cooking with limited utensils, staying on track can seem impossible. However, with careful planning and a few strategic habits, it’s possible to stay healthy and energized wherever you go.

Healthy Eating on the Road

One of the most effective strategies we’ve found when we are on the road is keeping a cooler stocked with healthy snacks like yogurt, fruit, peanut butter, mixed nuts, rice cakes, and plenty of water for travel days. These items are not only nutritious but also easy to eat on the go. Understanding the right amount and types of food to bring is crucial. Our first shopping trip when we arrive anywhere with a refrigerator always includes the essentials: Fairlife fat-free milk, Oikos Triple Zero vanilla yogurt, frozen fruit (no sugar added), various proteins (chicken, pork, beef, turkey), Mission Carb Balance tortilla shells, seltzer water, bottled water, peppers, onions, mixed vegetables, cheese, lettuce, peanut butter powder, rice cakes, and popcorn.

For breakfast, we typically enjoy oats with fruit, protein powder, yogurt, and peanut butter powder. Lunch is often prepared in advance, and dinner varies based on the kitchen utensils and appliances available. We do our best to include all macronutrients in each meal, so it’s important to remain flexible and creative with meal prep to ensure we stick to our healthy eating habits.

Managing Supplements on the Go

Supplements can be challenging to manage on the road, but we’ve found that keeping all our supplements in a convenient, easily accessible bag makes a big difference. It’s often hard to get all the necessary vitamins and minerals from our meals, especially when we’re on the move. Routine supplement intake helps us fill in any nutritional gaps, ensuring our bodies have what they need to function optimally. This includes multivitamins, omega-3s, vitamin D, and any specific supplements tailored to our individual health needs.

Planning for Success

Planning is another significant aspect of maintaining our health on the road. When we plan our week, we can stick to our fitness routines and healthy eating plans more effectively. This includes scheduling gym time, workouts, and exploring new places, ensuring we balance work, health, and leisure. Detailed planning allows us to make the most of our time, ensuring we get our movement in through activities like sightseeing, hiking, and enjoying local hobbies and attractions. One of our goals is to hit all 63 U.S. National Parks, and by incorporating physical activities into our explorations, we stay active and engaged with the stunning natural beauty these parks offer.

Flexibility and Resilience

Every new location brings its own set of challenges, but prioritizing health helps us adapt. No, we’re not perfect, but we always strive to get back on track. This flexibility and resilience are key to staying healthy while traveling. When you prioritize planning, you ensure that your schedule includes time for meal prep, exercise, and relaxation, making it easier to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Establishing a Routine

A well-established routine also plays a crucial role in maintaining our health. By starting our day with breakfast, taking our supplements, moving our bodies, setting intentions, and practicing gratitude and mindfulness, we not only keep our bodies fit but also nurture our mental health. This routine helps us stay grounded and focused, reducing stress and increasing overall well-being.

The Power of Mindfulness

Mindfulness practices, such as setting daily intentions and practicing gratitude, have proven to be a necessity. They help us maintain a positive mindset and keep our mental health in check. Studies have shown that mindfulness can reduce stress, improve focus, and boost overall happiness, which is essential when facing the unpredictability of travel.

Adaptability is Key

Constantly moving has proven to be unpredictable, and it has been crucial to be adaptable. A healthy routine provides structure and stability, helping us navigate the ups and downs of life on the road. By prioritizing our health and staying flexible, we can make the most of our travels without sacrificing our well-being.

Summary

In summary, staying healthy while traveling is all about planning, flexibility, and maintaining a routine. By stocking up on healthy snacks, prepping meals, staying on top of supplements, and practicing mindfulness, we can enjoy our travels while keeping our bodies and minds in peak condition. Remember, it’s not about being perfect but about consistently making choices that align with our health goals.
