Hi! I’m Larry Wasserman, the Owner and Fitness Director of Body Basics Fitness in Warren, NJ. I’m a certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
I have also attained the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Level II certification – The Functional Aging Specialist certification through the Functional Aging Institute. In addition, I became a Certified Golf Fitness Professional through the Titelist Performance Institute (TPI).
As I help the majority of my clients lose weight, I have also studied nutrition and weight loss in regard to the human body and the impact aging and hormones can have on losing body fat. I have helped thousands of people of twenty years lose fat weight with my coaching and training protocols.
My fitness journey started later in life than most personal trainers. For me it was age forty. Beginning in my early twenties, I began to experience knee and low-back pain. That went on for two decades. When it flared up I would see a chiropractor or physical therapist at least twice a year for a couple of months worth of treatments. Over a period of years I became less active and I gained over 35 lbs! Two weeks before my 40th birthday I looked in the mirror while shaving one morning and I realized what I had become…”fat, bald, and 40!” It was not my greatest moment. To my surprise and great joy, my wife gave me a gym membership for my 40th birthday.
Within two weeks I felt better. Within six-months I had lost 30 lbs and was on my way to becoming a personal trainer as a result of my own transformation. I loved my gym and the people there.
Even though I lost weight and felt better, I was still chasing knee and low-back pain. This led me to an educational journey where I learned the root cause of my pain and what I could “personally do” to stay ahead of it. I cannot stress strongly enough how powerful it is to be able to take control of a situation and after so many years, finally move beyond the slow debilitating impact of physical pain. I am dedicated to helping men and women do the same.
A workout does not have to be overly strenuous to be effective.
Conversely, a personal training session can and should address the limiting factors of the individual and help them have better joint mobility, improved capacity to stabilize their body, (both statically and dynamically), and finally, get them stronger.
The big picture is about learning to move the body in functional patterns which incorporate strength, balance and core stabilization. This is more efficient and beneficial than training a single muscle or group of muscles in a uniform pattern, especially one dictated by the use of a weight training machine. The human body moves as an integrated unit and needs to be trained as such. This type of training will best prepare an individual for tasks performed in everyday life. It will also set them up for moving well as they age.
I continue to study and research the most effective, efficient, and most importantly motivating modes of exercise available to implement in my Warren, New Jersey personal training studio. I now teach these methods every day in order to enrich the lives that surround me through exercise and healthy living. In addition, my mission is to help people by educating them. It serves little purpose if people go through the motions without learning and then applying the knowledge.
