Hi Phoenixes! Courtney here, owner and founder of Phoenix Body Fit! Thank you so much for trusting us with your health and fitness journey, we are honored to have to part of the Phoenix Phamily!
My fitness journey really started about 3 months after having my second child (I have 2, my son Parker (2015) and my daughter Aria (2017)). I had been really active in competitive dance and cheerleading growing up and never really needed to worry about exercise or nutrition— so we thought! Settling in to adult life I became much more sedentary and fell in to that “fat and happy” stage in meeting, dating and the early years of our marriage with my husband. I slowly packed the pounds on over the years and gained 40LBs before getting pregnant with my son. Then over two pregnancies I added more weight with unhealthy habits, “I’m pregnant and eating for two” mentality and gestational diabetes with my second. By the time all was said and done I was 171LBs. I couldn’t even believe it and HATED it but had no idea of what being “healthy” looked like.
I signed up with the new year at a big box gym and would go and follow workouts from a Women’s Health 101 exercises book my husband bought me. I had no clue what I was doing, spending 2 hours+ in the gym mostly spinning my wheels. My husband dragged me (kicking and screaming) to a group fitness HIIT gym where people could show me what to do for 30 minutes and then I could take that knowledge back to the gym. Y’all I fell in love.
Back in love with myself, in love with my energy, in love feeling GREAT!, in love fitness and with a community of amazing friends who were all so supportive and encouraging, and in love with seeing just how far I could push myself.
What I didn’t know then was that two-a-days 6 days a week HIIT training isn’t sustainable long-term, and I wasn’t being taught about properly fueling for energy and health instead of dieting for weightloss. As much as they promised “muscle building” after I had become “skinny-fat” I didn’t know then that it was never going to happen in that environment and I was actually doing more damage to my body and metabolism than moving anywhere near my body goals. It was long past-due time to move on.
I went back to the big box, dove deep into figuring out how to get the body I wanted, became a personal trainer to teach myself, started seeing results and decided to enter a bodybuilding competition as a bikini athlete. Again, I fell in love!!
But I missed my tribe. I wanted to have the community back. I realized so many women don’t start their journey because they don’t know what to do and they’re intimidated by the gym. By machines and men. I wanted to show women how strong they are. How much they’re capable of. I wanted to provide a safe, non-intimidating, fun, supportive environment for women to come to to start their health and fitness journeys.
And so, Phoenix was born.
