How a coach keeps you accountable
Everyone needs accountability – we receive it on the daily without notice. At work- “I need you to get this done by Thursday’s meeting”. At home- “can you clean the table for me?”. These are two examples of how someone expects you to accomplish something. You are being held accountable for following through. Now you will also understand the importance of having a coach.
Having a personal trainer, or a coach is an important tool to have at your personal gain or expense. It is our job as a coach to work with you on achieving a goal you may have… Or maybe a goal that we both negotiate on. To do this, a game plan must be created, and then executed by both parties for getting a result.
People typically get a trainer because they have a problem that they want help solving. It is oftentimes related to exercise, nutrition, or something habitual they may be struggling with. It can be something they have struggled with their entire life, like maintaining a healthy weight. Or it can be something they are curious about, like different weightlifting variations to keep from getting bored.
Why hiring a coach makes a difference
There are multiple reasons why someone may get a trainer or a coach, and all the reasons are valid. They may be nervous at first and have thoughts pop into their mind, “what if I don’t get results?”, “will it be just a waste of money?”, “why do they have me doing weird exercises that aren’t going to benefit me or help me reach my goal?”, etc. and these are valid thoughts. They are especially valid if you have never worked with a trainer or a coach in the past.
In order to adapt and grow in life, to reach your individual goals, there needs to be a sense of discomfort. Because at the end of the day, if we are not changing what we are currently doing, then nothing will change towards meeting our end goal.
Supporting your journey
It is the trainer’s responsibility to meet you where you are and understand how you are feeling. Another one of our responsibilities is to help you step out of that “comfort zone” in small steps, to help you learn and recognise that you can do hard or challenging things. It is our job to help you reach that light at the end of the tunnel that you didn’t know existed.
A good trainer takes all factors into account when working with you. They know you are trying something new and give you credit for stepping out of your comfort zone. The clients know you do not want to spend the hard earned money you made on them to not get good results. They know they need to be flexible with every individual they work with because not two people are the same. And most importantly, they know they are not just holding you accountable as an individual who has hired a trainer. They are also holding themselves accountable to not let you down. They want to see you succeed, they want to see you grow, they want to help you become the best version of yourself. If they didn’t want this, then they would not have became a coach.
Investing in a trainer: a commitment to yourself
In 2025, it has never been easier to look up different exercises or activities to do thanks to social media. Many people on social media make comments about how it is pointless to have a trainer because you can just look everything up on your own and do it yourself. And some of those people are right, that is a possibility. But when you pay for a trainer, you are paying for the service, you are paying for someone to hold you accountable, you are paying for someone to teach you about the body- how it works and why it works the way it does. You are paying for someone to keep you motivated and engaged- coming back for more, and you are paying for someone who wants to make these things fun and exciting for you… This is the importance of having a coach.
The people who make comments like this probably have never walked in a new client’s shoes, they lack sympathy regarding the individual who is apprehensive to starting, or the individual who has tried multiple times but has failed.
At the end of the day, having a coach is one of the best decisions you will ever make. The juice is worth the squeeze, the lessons learned and the wisdom shared are priceless. This is why so many people invest in a trainer. They are making an investment in their own personal growth and overall health.
